Challa Bread 

​

 

Traditional Dairy free  bread for the Jewish Sabbath.

You can add 1 cup raisins or golden raisins for a sweet treat!

 
Ingredients:

500g  white flour 

25 g of yeast 

3 tablespoons of brown sugar 

1/2 tablespoon of salt 

1/4 cup canola oil or rice bran oil 

1-2  cups of warm water (body temp) 

egg mixed with a bit of water- for egg wash 

Some sesame seeds or poppy seeds and a bit of sugar

 

Method:
  1. Heat the oven to a hot oven of 180°C.

 

  1. Place all the ingredients into the mixer bowl except for the oil and water –mix slowly for 2 min .

  2. Add the water and oil slowly and mix for another 8 min at a high speed until the dough is nice and soft but not too sticky and separates from the edge of the bowl.

 

 3.Cover and leave to rise for about 2 hours. 

 

 4.Divide the dough and plait into “Challah” plait.

 

 5.Place in the baking tray and spread the egg wash and  sprinkle with some sesame. seeds and a bit of sugar.

 

 6.Bake in the oven for 30 min until the bread is nice and golden.

 

 7.Place on a cooling rack to cool.

*You can replace the white flour with wholemeal white flour and the brown sugar with caster sugar.
